Calla 'Aethiopica'

Zantedeschia

Zantedeschia aethiopica, commonly known as Calla Lily or Arum Lily, reaches 2 to 3 feet tall, featuring large, pure white, trumpet-shaped flowers. Its broad, arrow-shaped dark green leaves provide a lush backdrop. This rhizomatous perennial thrives in full sun to partial shade, preferring moist, organically rich soil.

Ideal for borders, pond margins, bog gardens, and containers, it is deer-resistant and produces a faint, sweet fragrance. Hardy to Zone 8, it may survive in Zone 7 with protection.

When should I plant Calla 'Aethiopica'?

Growing and Maintenance Tips for Calla 'Aethiopica'

Planting: Plant rhizomes between September and early December, as soon as possible after receiving them to ensure freshness. Set them 3 to 4 inches deep in moist, well-drained soil enriched with compost. Position any buds or eyes facing upward.
Location: Choose a spot in full sun or partial shade. In warmer climates, provide afternoon shade to prevent stress.
Soil: Prefers rich, moisture-retentive soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0). Clay soils are acceptable if amended with compost and grit for drainage.
Watering: Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy throughout the growing season.
Temperature: Hardy to around 14°F (–10°C). In colder zones, mulch heavily or lift and store rhizomes in a cool, dry place before deep winter.
Fertilization: Feed every 2–3 weeks during active growth with a balanced liquid fertilizer.
Pruning: Remove spent flower stems at the base. Allow foliage to yellow naturally before cutting back in late fall.
Pest & Disease: Watch for aphids, spider mites, and root rot. Ensure good air circulation and avoid waterlogged conditions.
Propagation: Divide rhizomes after dormancy or in early spring.
