Calla Lily 'Schwarzwalder' is a deep maroon-black variety with a velvety texture, creating a dramatic contrast against its dark green, speckled foliage. The chalice-shaped blooms are highly sought after in floral arrangements for their bold, exotic appeal. Blooming in midsummer, this variety thrives in full sun to part shade with organically rich, consistently moist, well-drained soil. Hardy in USDA zones 9 to 11, it is often grown as an annual in cooler climates, with bulbs lifted and stored for winter. 'Schwarzwalder' is deer-resistant and performs well in containers, borders, and cut flower displays.

Planting: In spring, plant rhizomes after the last frost when soil has warmed to at least 60°F. Set them just below the surface—about 3 to 4 inches deep—with the growing points facing upward.
Location: Choose a spot in full sun or partial shade. In hotter climates, afternoon shade helps prevent stress.
Soil: Use fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist during active growth, especially in dry spells. Avoid waterlogging.
Temperature: Ideal range is 60–75°F. In zones below 8, grow as annuals or lift rhizomes in fall.
Fertilization: Feed every 2–3 weeks with a high-potash fertilizer—liquid seaweed is a great organic option.
Pruning: Remove spent blooms and yellowing foliage to tidy the plant and encourage new growth.
Pest & Disease: Watch for aphids, thrips, and fungal issues. Ensure good air circulation and avoid soggy soil.
Propagation: Divide rhizomes in spring before planting.
