Montbretia

Crocosmia 'Lucifer' is known for its brilliant red, tubular flowers that bloom in dense clusters from mid to late summer. Thriving in full sun and well-drained soil, it attracts hummingbirds and butterflies while resisting deer. Its upright, sword-like foliage adds vertical interest to borders, and its drought tolerance makes it a reliable choice for low-maintenance gardens.

Growing and Maintenance Tips for Crocosmia 'Lucifer' (Ships in Spring)

Planting: Plant corms in spring after the last frost or in fall in warmer climates. Set them 3 to 5 inches deep and 6 to 8 inches apart in fertile, well-drained soil.
Location: Prefers full sun (6–8 hours daily). In hot climates, light afternoon shade is acceptable.
Soil: Moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Amend heavy clay with compost or sand for better drainage.
Watering: Keep soil evenly moist during the growing season. Once established, crocosmia is moderately drought-tolerant.
Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 6–9. Some cultivars like ‘Lucifer’ are hardy to zone 5 with mulch protection.
Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10) in early spring and again in midsummer to support flowering.
Pruning: Deadhead spent blooms to encourage reblooming. Cut back foliage in late fall after it yellows.
Propagation: Divide clumps every 2 to 3 years in spring or fall to prevent overcrowding and maintain vigor.
Pest & Disease: Generally pest-free. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues.
