Eucomis 'Autumnalis' (Ships in Spring)

Eucomis autumnalis, commonly known as the autumn pineapple lily, is a bulbous perennial native to southern Africa. It produces dense spikes of green, yellow, or white star-shaped flowers in late summer, topped with a tuft of green bracts that resemble a pineapple. The flowers are sweetly scented and last for several weeks.

This plant grows from a large bulb and forms a basal rosette of wavy-edged, strap-shaped leaves. It typically reaches 30 to 45 cm (1 to 1.5 feet) tall and thrives in full sun with well-drained soil. Hardy in USDA zones 7 to 10, it is often grown as an ornamental and can be used as a cut flower. Eucomis autumnalis is also known for its deer resistance and ease of care, making it a great addition to gardens and containers.

Growing and Maintenance Tips for Eucomis 'Autumnalis' (Ships in Spring)

Planting: Plant bulbs in spring after the last frost, 4 to 6 inches deep and 10 to 12 inches apart. Position them upright in well-drained soil—adding grit or sand helps prevent rot.
Location: Full sun is ideal, though light afternoon shade is tolerated in hot climates. Choose a sheltered spot to protect tall flower spikes from wind.
Soil: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH (6.0–7.0). Avoid heavy, wet soils.
Watering: Water regularly during the growing season to keep soil evenly moist. Reduce watering once foliage begins to die back.
Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 8–10. In colder zones, lift bulbs in fall and store in a frost-free, dry place.
Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer in spring and again in midsummer to support flowering.
Pruning: Remove spent flower spikes and yellowing foliage to maintain appearance.
