Queen of the Prairie

Filipendula rubra 'Venusta,' also known as Queen of the Prairie, is a tall, stately perennial with large fragrant deep pink flowers that fade to pale pink over time. Its deeply cut, bright green foliage adds texture and contrast, making it a striking presence in borders and naturalized plantings. Thriving in moist, fertile soil, it performs best in full sun to part shade and is highly resistant to deer. Ideal for rain gardens, stream edges, and cottage-style landscapes, this long-lived perennial provides reliable summer color with minimal maintenance.

Growing and Maintenance Tips for Filipendula 'Rubra Venusta' (Ships in Spring)

Planting: Plant in early to mid-spring, ideally within a week of receiving the roots. Soak bare roots in water for 3–6 hours before planting. Set the roots so they’re fully covered, with the crown or any visible buds just at or slightly above soil level. You can start them in 2-liter pots with quality compost or plant directly into the garden once soil is workable.
Location: Choose a site in full sun to partial shade. Filipendula thrives in reliably moist soil—perfect for borders near ponds, streams, or damp meadows.
Soil: Prefers humus-rich, moisture-retentive soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH (6.0–7.0). Amend with compost if needed. Avoid dry or fast-draining spots.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during the first growing season. Do not allow it to dry out—summer watering may be necessary.
Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 3–9. No winter protection needed.
Fertilization: Apply compost or a balanced fertilizer in spring as growth begins. Avoid overfeeding.
Pruning: Cut back stems to 2–4 inches above soil level in autumn after flowering. Remove spent blooms to tidy the plant during the season.
Propagation: Divide clumps every few years in spring or fall to rejuvenate and multiply.
Pest & Disease: Generally pest-free. Ensure good air circulation to prevent mildew in humid conditions.
