Hymenocallis 'Festalis' (Ships in Spring)

Spider Lily

Hymenocallis festalis, commonly known as the Peruvian Daffodil or Spider Lily, is a tender bulbous perennial prized for its exotic, fragrant white blooms. The flowers resemble delicate white spiders, with six narrow, curled petals surrounding a deep central cup. Blooming in mid to late summer, they release a sweet, citrus-like fragrance, making them a standout in evening gardens. This variety grows up to 30 inches tall and thrives in full sun to part shade with moist, organically rich, well-drained soil. It is deer and rabbit resistant and generally free from serious pests or diseases. In colder climates, bulbs should be lifted and stored indoors before frost to ensure survival.

Growing and Maintenance Tips for Hymenocallis 'Festalis' (Ships in Spring)

Planting: Plant bulbs in spring after the last frost, 4 to 5 inches deep and 8 to 12 inches apart. Position with the neck just above soil level. In containers, use one bulb per 8" pot or three in a 15" pot.
Location: Full sun to partial shade. Choose a sheltered spot to protect tall flower stalks from wind.
Soil: Well-drained, sandy or loamy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0). Avoid heavy or soggy soils.
Watering: Water sparingly until growth appears, then keep soil evenly moist during active growth. Reduce watering after foliage yellows.
Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 8–10. In colder zones, lift bulbs in fall and store in a cool, dry place (55–60°F).
Fertilization: Feed monthly during the growing season with a balanced fertilizer. Stop feeding once foliage begins to die back.
Pruning: Remove spent flower stalks. Allow foliage to die back naturally to nourish the bulb.
Propagation: Divide offsets in fall or spring. Replant immediately or store dry until spring.
Pest & Disease: Generally pest-free. Ensure good drainage to prevent bulb rot.
