Kniphofia 'Royal Standard' (Ships in Spring)

Red Hot Poker

Kniphofia 'Royal Standard' is a robust red-hot poker with dense spikes of bright yellow, tubular flowers that open from scarlet buds, creating a striking bicolor effect. Blooming from early to mid-summer, the flowers rise on sturdy bronze stems above a tufted clump of narrow, dark green foliage. This drought-tolerant perennial thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained, humus-rich soil. Ideal for borders, prairies, and naturalistic plantings, it attracts butterflies and hummingbirds while resisting deer and rabbits.

Growing and Maintenance Tips for Kniphofia 'Royal Standard' (Ships in Spring)

Planting: Plant in spring or fall. Set crowns just below soil level and space 18 to 24 inches apart. Choose a site with excellent drainage—Kniphofia dislikes wet feet, especially in winter.
Location: Full sun is best. In hot climates, light afternoon shade helps prevent leaf scorch.
Soil: Well-drained, sandy or loamy soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH (6.0–7.0). Amend heavy soils with grit or compost.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, water during dry spells—plants are moderately drought-tolerant. Avoid soggy conditions.
Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 5–9. In colder zones, mulch crowns in winter for added protection.
Fertilization: Apply compost or a balanced fertilizer in early spring. Avoid overfeeding—excess nitrogen can reduce flowering.
Pruning: Deadhead spent flower spikes to encourage rebloom. Cut back foliage in late fall or early spring to tidy the clump.
Propagation: Divide clumps every 3 to 5 years in spring. Replant divisions promptly.
Pest & Disease: Generally pest-free. Good drainage and air circulation help prevent crown rot.
