Oxalis 'Iron Cross'

Good Luck Shamrock

Oxalis tetraphylla 'Iron Cross', also known as the Good Luck Shamrock, is a bulbous perennial prized for its distinctive four-leaf foliage. Each leaflet features a rich green base with a dark purplish blotch, forming a cross-like pattern. The leaves open during the day to absorb sunlight and fold at night, adding an element of movement to its charm.

From early summer until frost, 'Iron Cross' produces sprays of trumpet-shaped, bright pink flowers, creating a striking contrast against its unique foliage. It thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained soil, making it ideal for rock gardens, containers, and seasonal displays. This variety is deer-resistant and easy to grow, offering a long season of interest without becoming invasive.

Growing and Maintenance Tips for Oxalis 'Iron Cross'

Planting: Plant bulbs just below the surface in a well-draining potting mix (2 parts peat to 1 part loam works well). Use a container with drainage holes.
Spacing: Place bulbs 1 to 2 inches apart for a full look.
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. A north- or east-facing window is ideal. Can tolerate some direct morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon rays.
Watering: Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Avoid overwatering—Oxalis dislikes soggy roots. Reduce watering during dormancy (often in summer or winter).
Temperature & Humidity: Thrives at 65–75°F. Protect from drafts and temperature swings. Prefers moderate humidity but adapts well to typical indoor conditions.
Fertilization: Feed every 2–4 weeks during active growth (spring and fall) with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength.
Dormancy: If leaves yellow and die back, the plant may be entering dormancy. Stop watering, let it rest in a cool, dry spot for 4–6 weeks, then resume watering to encourage regrowth.
Propagation: Divide bulbs or offsets when repotting. Each section should have 3+ growing points for best success.
Pest & Disease: Generally pest-free. Watch for root rot if overwatered. Toxic if ingested—keep away from pets and children.
