Puschkinia Scilloides 'Libanotica'

Striped Squill

Puschkinia libanotica, commonly known as Striped Squill, is a spring-flowering bulb that produces clusters of pale blue, star-shaped flowers adorned with delicate darker blue stripes. Blooming in early to mid-spring, it adds a soft, elegant touch to gardens when few other plants are active. Thriving in full sun to part shade, Puschkinia libanotica prefers well-drained, sandy or gritty soil and is deer-resistant. It naturalizes well, spreading through bulb offsets and self-seeding, making it ideal for rock gardens, woodland plantings, and naturalized drifts.

Growing and Maintenance Tips for Puschkinia Scilloides 'Libanotica'

Planting: Plant bulbs in fall, 3 to 4 inches deep with the pointed end up. Choose a well-drained site—ideal for rock gardens, borders, or under deciduous trees.
Spacing: Space bulbs 2 to 3 inches apart. They’ll naturalize over time into low, spreading clumps.
Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Spring sun before trees leaf out is perfect.
Soil: Well-drained, sandy or loamy soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH (6.0–7.0). Avoid heavy clay.
Watering: Keep soil moist during active growth and bloom. Once foliage yellows, reduce watering—bulbs prefer dry summer dormancy.
Temperature & Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 4–8. Tolerates cold winters and dry summer conditions.
Fertilization: Apply compost or a balanced bulb fertilizer in early spring as shoots emerge.
Pruning: Allow foliage to die back naturally. Remove spent flower stalks for tidiness.
Propagation: Multiplies by offsets and self-seeding. Divide clumps every few years after foliage fades.
Pest & Disease: Generally pest-free and deer-resistant. Good drainage prevents bulb rot.
