Sanguisorba 'Little Angel' is a compact, variegated burnet with deep green leaves edged in creamy white, forming a dense, low-growing mat. In midsummer to early fall, slender stems rise above the foliage, topped with oval, ruby-red flower clusters that resemble matchsticks. Thriving in full sun to part shade, it prefers moist, well-drained soil and is well-suited for rain gardens, borders, and containers. This dwarf variety is easy to grow and adds unique texture and color to small-scale plantings.
Planting: Plant in spring or early fall. Set the crown level with the soil surface in well-drained, moisture-retentive soil.
Spacing: Space 10 to 12 inches apart. This compact perennial forms a low mat, ideal for edging or containers.
Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade. In hot climates, afternoon shade helps prevent leaf scorch.
Soil: Moist, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0–7.5. Tolerates wet spots but dislikes prolonged drought.
Watering: Keep soil evenly moist, especially during dry spells. Once established, it tolerates short periods of dryness.
Temperature & Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 4–8. Shallow-rooted but resilient with light winter mulch in colder zones.
Fertilization: Apply compost or a balanced fertilizer in early spring. Avoid overfeeding to maintain compact growth.
Pruning: Deadhead spent blooms to prolong flowering. Cut back old stems in late fall or early spring.
Propagation: Divide clumps in spring or fall. Shallow roots make it easy to lift and replant.
Pest & Disease: Generally pest-free. Good drainage and airflow help prevent root rot or mildew.
