Scilla Litardierei 'Amethystina'

Scilla amethystina, also known as Amethyst Meadow Squill, is a bulbous perennial native to the western Balkans. It produces dense pyramidal spikes of tiny, star-shaped violet-blue flowers in late spring to early summer, lasting for about three weeks. This species thrives in fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. It grows 4–10 inches tall and 2–3 inches wide, making it an excellent choice for naturalizing in gardens. It has received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.

Growing and Maintenance Tips for Scilla Litardierei 'Amethystina'

Planting: Plant bulbs in fall, 3 to 4 inches deep with the pointed end up. Ideal for naturalizing in meadows, woodland edges, or under deciduous trees.
Spacing: Space 2 to 3 inches apart. Bulbs will multiply over time to form low, spreading clumps.
Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Dappled spring sunlight before canopy leaf-out is ideal.
Soil: Fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0–7.0. Avoid heavy clay or waterlogged sites.
Watering: Water during active growth and bloom. Once foliage yellows, reduce watering—bulbs prefer dry summer dormancy.
Temperature & Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 5–8. Cold-tolerant and well-suited to temperate climates.
Fertilization: Apply compost or a balanced bulb fertilizer in early spring as shoots emerge.
Pruning: Allow foliage to die back naturally. Remove spent flower stalks for tidiness.
Propagation: Multiplies by offsets and self-seeding. Divide clumps every few years after dormancy.
