Iris siberica 'How Audacious' (Ships in Spring)

Siberian Iris

Iris sibirica 'How Audacious' is a Siberian iris with red-violet standards and blue-violet falls that deepen to red-violet at the edges. A delicate cream wire rim and dashes over the outer petals create a plicata effect, while a bold yellow signal covers half the petal. Blooming from mid to late season, this tetraploid variety reaches about 34 inches tall and thrives in full sun to part shade with moist, well-drained soil. Ideal for borders, rain gardens, and pond edges.

Growing and Maintenance Tips for Iris siberica 'How Audacious' (Ships in Spring)

Planting: Plant rhizomes in spring or fall, 1 to 2 inches deep with the crown just below soil level. Space 12 to 24 inches apart. Water well after planting to settle the soil.
Location: Full sun to partial shade. In hot climates, light afternoon shade helps prevent leaf scorch.
Soil: Moist, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 5.5–7.0). Enrich with compost or peat moss if needed.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist during the growing season, especially in spring and early summer. Tolerates brief dry spells once established.
Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 3–8. Cold-tolerant and thrives in northern climates.
Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring and again after flowering. Avoid high-nitrogen formulas.
Pruning: Remove spent flower stalks and yellowing foliage. Cut back to the ground in late fall or early spring.
Propagation: Divide clumps every 3 to 4 years in late summer to maintain vigor and prevent overcrowding.
Pest & Disease: Low-maintenance and generally pest-free. Good air circulation helps prevent fungal issues.
