Leucojum 'Aestivum'

Giant Snowflake

Leucojum aestivum, commonly known as summer snowflake, is a bulbous perennial that reaches 14 to 24 inches in height. It produces delicate, nodding white flowers with green markings at the tips, blooming in late spring. The strap-shaped leaves emerge alongside the flowers, forming a graceful clump.

This species thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil. It is deer-resistant and adapts well to naturalized plantings, pond edges, and woodland gardens. Despite its name, it typically blooms in mid-to-late spring, not summer.

Growing and Maintenance Tips for Leucojum 'Aestivum'

Planting: Plant bulbs in fall, 4 to 5 inches deep and 4 to 6 inches apart, with the pointed end up. For naturalized drifts, scatter and plant where they fall.
Location: Partial shade to full sun. Thrives under deciduous trees or in damp, lightly shaded borders.
Soil: Moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH (6.0–7.0). Tolerates heavier soils better than many bulbs.
Watering: Keep soil moist during active growth in spring. Reduce watering after foliage yellows—bulbs prefer dry summer dormancy.
Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 4–8. Cold-tolerant and long-lived once established.
Fertilization: Apply compost or a balanced fertilizer in early spring as shoots emerge.
Pruning: Allow foliage to die back naturally to feed the bulb. Remove spent flower stalks for tidiness.
Propagation: Naturalizes by offsets. Divide clumps every 5 to 7 years in summer when dormant.
